Don’t print this list from the blog. The navigation menu on the blog is really long and this jacks with the printing. You’ll waste a lot of paper without getting everything on the list. Copy to Word or a text file and print from that.

Week 18 is a vegetarian week, best for the first week of the year or whenever you are wanting a week of eating light and healthy without a lot of cooking.  Shopping on January 2, 2012 for 4 people, these groceries cost $125.73 at Food-a-Rama.

 

Complete List for Eating Light

  • 1 loaf sliced bread (white or wheat)
  • 1 package (20) flour tortillas

Dairy

  • 1 large container Greek-style yogurt, or 1 multi-pack yogurt cups, for breakfast (minimum 6 servings)
  • 1 gallon milk (whole, 2%, 1%, skim, or soy)
  • 8 oz or more block cheddar cheese to eat with apples or crackers
  • 8 oz shredded cheddar cheese (for quesadillas and sprinkle over  baked potatoes)
  • 12 eggs

Cereal & Condiments

  • 1 jar peanut butter (creamy or crunchy)
  • 1 jar jam or preserves (grape, strawberry, or apricot)
  • 1 box cereal (Frosted Mini Wheats, Pops, Apple Jacks, or granola)
  • 1 box granola

Dried Beans, Rice, & Baking Aisle

  • 1 box Success brand boil-in-bag Rice
  • 2 boxes Betty Crocker Supreme Brownie Mix with Hershey’s syrup
  • 1 pound dried lima beans
  • 1 pound dried kidney beans
  • 1 pound dried black-eyed peas
  • 1 pound dried black beans
  • 1 pound dried pinto beans
  • 2 packages instant mashed potatoes (add 2 cups hot water to 1 mix packet for 4 servings)

Produce

  • 12 apples
  • 8 pears
  • 8 oranges
  • 8 lemons or limes (squeeze over salads as dressing)
  • 8 bananas (buy slightly green)
  • 1 box strawberries
  • 2 pounds grapes
  • 2 jicama (peel, then slice into salads or eat like carrot sticks)
  • 2 zucchini squash
  • 3 cucumbers
  • 4 large tomatoes
  • 6 packages of salad mix
  • 1 package baby spinach (for salads or steaming)
  • 1 box alfalfa sprouts (add to salads or sandwiches)
  • 4 large Russet potatoes for baking
  • 3 small onions
  • 2 bunches green onions
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 2 pounds regular size carrots
  • 1 bunch celery
  • 1 package baby carrots for lunches or snacking
  • 2 bunches or crowns of broccoli
  • 1 cauliflower
  • 6 avocados (for salads and sandwiches)
  • 4 bell peppers (any color, use for sandwiches or in salads)

Frozen

  • 1 package frozen green peas (add to fried rice)

Cleaning & Storage

  • toilet paper (buy a minimum of 1 roll per person per week)
  • 1 roll paper towels (if using as napkins with meals, buy two rolls)
  • recycle your plastic grocery bags as trash can liners or buy can liners
