Cinnamon Apple

Cinnamon apple halvesThis recipe is from my great-grandmother, who baked them in an oven and also included dates, nuts, and red food coloring in hers. She only made them once a year, as a special Thanksgiving treat. Here is a quick version that only ‘bakes’ for 30 seconds in the microwave.

  • 1 apple, cut in half horizontally
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons sugar

Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl or plate. Using a small spoon or spreading knife, dig out a tiny well in the center of the apple. This also gets rid of the seeds and most of the core.

Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar across the top of each apple half and pour the rest into the well.

Put one of the halves in the plate or bowl used to mix the cinnamon sugar and microwave on high for 30 seconds.

Carefully remove the hot plate and transfer the warm apple to a cool plate or paper towel. Heat the other half of the apple on the plate for 30 seconds.

When both halves of the apple have cooled enough to handle, use the spreading knife to cut the apple half into quarters. This helps spread the cinnamon sugar from the well onto the cut slices of apple.

Enjoy!
